Mr. E.C.B.Bamon holds a Bachelors Degree in Humanities. He taught for a few years in a school and has since his early years been actively engaged in agriculture, farming and allied activities.

He is presently the Cabinet Minister of the State of Meghalaya. He was first elected as a public representative in 1989 into the Jaintia Hills autonomous District Council and re-elected in 1994. In 2007, he was elected into the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and subsequently inducted into the State Cabinet as a Minister in-charge of agriculture, irrigation, revenue and animal husbandry and veterinary.

As a Minister for Agriculture, he is concerned about making the State self-sufficient in foodgrains, especially rice - the staple diet of the people through various interventions like introduction of high yielding varieties and new methods of cultivation. In order to increase the area under rice, he plans to provide adequate water for spring paddy as a second crop, by means of minor and mini irrigation projects.

The State’s varied agro-climatic conditions are ideal for growing temperate and tropical crops. The district he hails from is also famous for turmeric cultivation and he would like to implement techniques that can improve both quantity and quality of cultivation.

In the field of animal husbandry, the State still imports beef from outside and his concern is to strengthen the State’s capacities in production of beef, pork and chicken, since most of the people are primarily meat-eaters.

He is looking forward to this trip as an opportunity for being a first-hand learning experience. He would like to closely look at China’s rice cultivation and its modern post harvest management interventions, especially in the areas mentioned above. His would also be keen to learn about meat processing facilities and latest methods of animal rearing.

Kind Regards
