AGRICULTURE AND FOOD PROCESSING MISSION TO CHINA
19 – 27 APRIL , 2007

Introduction

The India China Alliance Centre (ICAC) organised the first ever Agriculture and Food Processing Mission to China from 19-27 April, 2007. The 27 Member Mission, led by Mr. K. J. Alphons, IAS (Retd.) Member, Kerala Legislative Assembly and Principal Advisor, India China Alliance Centre co-incided with the opening of The 8th China (Shouguang) International Vegetable Sci-tech Fair. The nine-day mission covered three Chinese cities – Weifang and Jinan in Shandong Province and Shenyang in Liaoning Province.

China's economic success over the last two decades has attracted world's attention and has been the subject of many an article in the international media. Reactions to China's performance have varied from astonishment to disbelief. In India, some view China as a manufacturing giant that would soon conquer India's domestic market. Others are dismissive of China's success saying that it is based on investment and marginal pricing, not sustainable factors in the long term. The fact, however, remains that China is the fastest growing economy in the World. The fact also remains that India is the second fastest growing economy in the World.

The Mission’s key areas of interest were:

- Frozen Vegetables
- Canned Fruits and Vegetables
- Fruit Juices and Concentrates
- Ready to eat Vegetables and Fruits
- Vegetables – Green Peas, Carrots, French Beans, Baby Corn, Spinach, Sweat Corn and Lady Finger.
- Fruits – Papaya, Strawberry, Litchi, Peaches and Pears
- Green House Cultivation – Tomatoes, Capsicum and Cucumber
- Technology to Grow, Cultivate, Process, Preserve and Pack.
- Technology for Manufactured Seeds for Fruits and Vegetables (Mentioned above)
- Emerging Technologies for Agricultural Equipments for sowing and harvesting.
- Emerging Technologies for Post Harvest Processes.
